Gutter Clutter: How to Use a Pressure Washer to Clean Your Gutters

Posted on

The guttering on your roof forms the first line of defence against heavy rain and potential water damage and flooding. Carrying out regular cleaning of your guttering will help to keep them in good working order and will also allow you to check for any signs of damage. Below is a guide to how you should clean the gutters on your home.

Gather your tools

You will need a ladder, a pair of thick gloves, a trowel, a bucket, a small hand brush and a pressure washer.

Remove leaves and debris

Place the ladder in place on level and firm ground and ask someone else to hold it in place to prevent it from slipping. Climb the ladder, holding on with both hands and remove any leaves and debris from the gutters, scooping any material out using the towel and depositing it in the bucket. Avoid leaning too far to either side as this could destabilise the ladder and cause it to fall.

Clean the downspout

Next, you should clean the downspout. If the downspout becomes clogged with leaves, it can cause rainwater to back up, causing the guttering to sag. This will lead to the water overflowing from the guttering which could cause damage to your roof. To clear the downspout, you should remove the end of the downspout and place it somewhere safe. Next, place the pressure washer into the mouth of the downspout and turn on the water supply. The high-pressure jet of water will flush away any dirt and debris which is blocking the downspout.

If the dirt and debris is being stubborn and will not move, you may need to use a plumber's snake to push it down the pipe. If you do not own this tool, you should be able to pick one up from a tool hire shop.

Clean the gutters

Once you are satisfied that the downspout is clear, you can use the pressure washer to rinse the gutters and remove any remaining dirt or debris which is clinging to the side. You should be cautious when using the water pressure. It is very easy to dislodge or damage roof tiles if you accidentally spray them with high-pressure water. If any dirt remains after you have pressure washed the gutters, you should use the small hand brush to remove it.

If you have any questions or concerns about your guttering, contact a professional roofing company who will be able to clean your gutters and inspect your roof for signs of water damage.
